Choosing a Junior Cricket Bat

Junior bats are available in 8 sizes to suit players as they grow. It is important to invest in the correct size and not to be tempted to choose something too large to allow for growth as this could negatively impact a youngster's game. The available sizes are as follows:

  • Size 1 for players up to 4'3" tall
  • Size 2 for players 4'3" to 4'6" tall
  • Size 3 for players 4'6" to 4'9" tall
  • Size 4 for players 4'9" to 4'11" tall
  • Size 5 for players 4'11" to 5'2" tall
  • Size 6 For players 5'2" to 5'4" tall
  • Harrow for players 5'4" to 5'6" tall
  • Academy for players 5'6" to 5'9" tall
Weight is also a major consideration as a bat that is too heavy will be difficult to wield and could lead to poor technique. Bats also vary in bow (curvature) with greater bow producing more power but reducing touch and control.

All junior bats require knocking-in before you can use them. This is an important process of compressing the fibres on the area of the bat, with particular attention paid to the vulnerable areas (edges and toes). A strong outer layer is created in order to withstand the impact of a cricket ball. Knocking in is essential to prolong the life of the bat but is a lengthy process if performed manually. At Fordham Sports we have unique machinery that will do the work for you and you can add this service to your order when purchasing your bat in store or online.
